Seasonal Apprentice Lineman

Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC) is hiring Seasonal Apprentice Lineman. Seasonal Apprentice Lineman safely build and maintain overhead and underground electrical lines. Qualified applicants will have successfully completed a Line Technician Certification program from a certified vocational school/equivalent.

This position is anticipated to start working in May with the assignment ending in November. Normal hours will occur between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. with emergency work on holidays, weekends or off hours, if needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Performs assigned work as a crew member under the direction of the Line Crew Foreman with supervision in compliance with established RUS, NEC, and MVEC specifications, codes, safety rules, and general operating procedures.
• Follows established steps and procedures as directed, checking with a Line Crew Foreman or Supervisor when a departure from established methods or orders are imminent.
• Contributes to the work effort by offering help on the crew as appropriate or required to ensure a safe, reliable and timely result.
• Landscapes area to its original condition, leaving a good impression of MVEC and its field personnel.
• Operates vehicles and construction equipment in a safe, reliable manner at all times in compliance with MVEC standards and procedures.
• Attends to safe operation of equipment thereby reducing accidents and hazards on or around the work site.
• Being familiar with and knowledgeable of how to operate cable locating equipment.
• Actively participates in established safety training and instruction programs, and consistently applies what is presented in terms of safety codes, rules and procedures.
• Maintains a good working relationship with the general public on a regular basis.

Required Qualifications:

• Line Technician Certificate from a certified vocational school or equivalent.
• Must climb poles or stand in a hydraulic bucket to work at heights of 55 feet or more installing transformers or line, often working in awkward positions.
• Frequently lifts materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally items that weigh up to 100 pounds.
• Must be able to perform pole top rescue.
• Interacts with crew members, Line Crew Foreman and Supervisors via verbal communication.
• First Aid/CPR certified.
• Valid Class A Minnesota Commercial Driver’s License.
• Mechanically inclined.

Safety Class:

This position requires a valid CDL driver's license. Along with additional CDL requirements, this position is subject to pre-employment drug screens. This position is also subject to random drug screening during employment. Both screenings include cannabis and hemp-derived products.

Working Conditions:

Works outdoors with great physical exertion, often in poor weather conditions. Occasionally works at night, on weekends and holidays to repair or install lines.  Works on uneven terrain in fields and along roads, often encountering vehicular traffic. Shovels dirt, works around noisy equipment, and visually inspects work site for safe conditions. Occasionally works with energized lines in accordance with classification; which must be handled according to NESC specifications using MVEC safety procedures to avoid electric shock.

Pay and Benefits:

Pay rate: $40.38/hr

Accrual of Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) and 4 hours paid for any MVEC observed holiday while employed.
