Apprentice/Journeyman Electric Line Worker

This position reports to the Operations Manager. Employees play an integral role in executing Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative’s mission, vision, and values to provide safe, reliable electricity to its members.  

Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative is an electrical distribution cooperative located in Wadena, MN. The cooperative provides electrical and related services to more than 8,900 members in Wadena, Todd, Hubbard, Becker, Cass, Morrison, Douglas, and Ottertail counties.

Job Description: 

The job duties include, but are not limited to, the items and responsibilities shown below. Changes to this job description may occur at any time and other duties may be assigned. 

  • Loads, hauls and delivers line poles and equipment to specified locations.
  • Frames and sets line poles and structures utilizing staking sheets.
  • Installs anchors, ground rods, ground wires and other line devices.
  • Performs stringing, splicing, sagging and tying electric conductors and supporting overhead cables.
  • Performs installation, splicing and termination of underground cable.
  • Performs substation load balancing and sectionalizing.
  • Installs and replaces meters, transformers, cutouts, OCRs, sectionalizing, voltage regulators, capacitors, circuit breakers and others.  
  • Performs and assists with all hot line work from bucket trucks and poles.
  • Work on conductors up to 7200 volts (up to 115,000 on rare occasions).
  • Constructs special structures including substations, switching stations and power banks.
  • Assists in installing street lamps and other specialized service equipment and maintaining such devices.
  • Trims trees and ensures clearance of right-of-way.
  • Assists in retiring and/or recycling construction assembly units and other equipment and materials, as well as recharging of materials when appropriate.
  • Is knowledgeable on all tools and equipment, performing routine maintenance as needed and ensuring equipment and tools are utilized according to the Co-ops safety policies and standards.
  • Assists, as assigned, with seasonal meter reading, collections, annual inventory, making of meter loops, overhauling transformers, and other work scheduled by the supervisor.
  • May be assigned to special crews or to work with qualified personnel on special jobs; (i.e., trouble calls, deep grounding, OCR overhaul, radio and television interference work, et al.)
  • Prepares necessary paperwork including time sheet, trouble and voltage reports, material tickets, etc.
  • Adheres to all safety regulations, ensuring a clean and non-hazardous work area and follows all safety protocols while performing normal duties and in the event of a hazardous situation.
  • Performs or assists with pole-top rescue as needed.
  • Participates as directed during emergency outages or severe weather conditions.

Job Requirements: 

 

  • Applicant MUST be totally committed to Safety
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Electrical Line Worker Diploma
  • Possess a current and valid Minnesota Class A/CDL Driver License
  • Current and Valid Health Card
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR
  • Must be able to pass a random drug test and pre-employment physical
  • Must live or relocate to within 30 minutes from TWEC Headquarters
  • Employees are expected to respond (i.e., clock in) to standby calls within thirty minutes within posted speed limits from the time of the dispatcher calls.
  • Must be willing and able to respond to after hours and weekend call outs and will be part of the on-call rotation.
  • Ability to operate various equipment such as a bucket truck, digger derrick, cable plow and other heavy equipment needed for the installation of overhead and underground power lines
  • Must complete required line worker apprenticeship program if not already a Journeyman
  • Must have ability to climb electrical poles and other structures
  • Must have ability to work respectfully with people including work crews, employees from other departments at TWEC and co-op members
  • Have moderate proficiency with computer and mobile devices
  • Must be able to stoop, carry, walk, push, pull, lift 100 lbs.
  • Must be able to read and interpret staking sheets
  • Must be willing and able to work in inclement weather at all hours and seasons.

 

Additional Detail:

Pay will follow Union pay scale and will be dependent on experience.
