Journeyman Lineworker

The Journeyman Lineworker constructs or maintains overhead and underground electrical distribution lines in a safe, reliable and timely manner which will provide MVEC members safe, reliable service with minimal outage hours or interference.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs assigned work as a crew member under the direction of the Line Crew Foreman with supervision in compliance with established RUS, NEC, and MVEC specifications, codes, safety rules, and general operating procedures.

• Performs work on crews as assigned in construction of new overhead single or three phase lines, including framing, setting and anchoring poles, stringing wires, hanging overhead equipment; hot line work in accordance with classification; loading/unloading materials; and completing the job according to the specifications and orders in a safe, reliable and timely manner.

• Contributes to the work effort by offering help on the crew as appropriate or required to ensure a safe, reliable and timely result.

• Performs work on crews as assigned in construction of new single or three phase underground lines, including terminating transformers and underground cable; burying wire or cable; setting up switching cabinets; hot line work in accordance with classification; loading/unloading material; and competing the job according to the specifications and orders in a safe, reliable and timely manner.

• Ensures that terminations on cables, transformers and switch gear are correct and will perform as expected.

• Landscapes area to its original condition, leaving a good impression of MVEC and its field personnel.

• Maintains the overhead and underground electrical distribution systems as scheduled or required, with the goal to restore service as safely and promptly as possible.

• Operates vehicles and construction equipment in a safe, reliable manner at all times in compliance with MVEC standards and procedures.

• Being familiar with and knowledgeable of how to operate cable locating equipment.

• Contributes to the coordinated effort by carrying out assigned duties and accountabilities in a safe, reliable, timely manner.

• Consistently applies safety practices on the job to help minimize accidents and hazards to MVEC personnel and the general public at a construction site or in transit to or from a work site.

• Responds to outages in a timely manner, carefully evaluating the situation before acting to restore service.

• Develops a good working knowledge of overall MVEC, RUS, NEC codes and specifications, and the internal MVEC operations such as the mapping system, staking sheets, and System Operation Orders.

• Participates actively in established safety training and instruction programs, and consistently applies what is presented in terms of safety codes, rules and procedures.

• Becomes skilled in first-aid and pole-top rescue procedures necessary to help ensure a prompt response in case of an accident or emergency.

• Maintains a good working relationship with the general public on a regular basis.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Line Technician Certificate from a certified vocational school or equivalent

• Completion of a four-year Apprenticeship program and Journey Lineworker certification

• First Aid/CPR certified

• Valid Class A MN Commercial Driver’s License

• Ability to climb poles or stand in a hydraulic bucket to work at heights of 55 feet or more installing transformers or line, often working in awkward positions

• Frequently lift materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally items that weigh up to 100 pounds

• Able to perform pole top rescue

• Occasionally works with energized lines in accordance with classification; which must be handled according to NESC specifications and MVEC safety procedures to avoid electric shock

• Interacts with crew members, Line Crew Foreman and Supervisors via verbal communication

• Mechanically inclined

• Live within a 25 mile radius from MVEC

SAFETY CLASS:

This position is considered a safety-sensitive position. This position is subject to pre-employment drug screens. This position is also subject to random drug screening during employment. Both screenings include cannabis and hemp-derived products.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works outdoors year-round with great physical exertion, often in poor weather conditions. Occasionally works at night, on weekends and holidays to repair or install lines. Works on uneven terrain in fields and along roads, often encountering vehicular traffic, shovels dirt, works around noisy equipment, and visually inspects work site for safe conditions. Occasionally works with energized lines in accordance with classification; which must be handled according to NESC specifications using MVEC safety procedures to avoid electric shock.
