AgendaThe first part of NRECA’s three-part Director Education Program, the Credentialed Cooperative Director (CCD) program consists of five courses that focus on basic governance knowledge and the essential skills required of cooperative directors. The CCD prepares directors to fulfill their fiduciary duty as elected officials serving on behalf of their membership. Upon completion of all five CCD courses, directors are awarded the Credentialed Cooperative Director Certificate by NRECA. Once the CCD is completed, participants can then pursue the Board Leadership Certificate.
2630.1 - Strategic PlanningBoards have ultimate responsibility for ensuring and evaluatingthe long-term health of the organization. They help fulfillthis duty through strategic thinking, identifying goals throughstrategic planning and authorizing the appropriate allocationof resources through the adoption of financial policies,budget review and approval and monitoring management’sprogress toward strategic goals. This course teaches directorshow to participate effectively in strategic thinking and planningprocesses.KEY TOPICS• Understanding the difference between strategic thinkingand strategic planning• Analyzing your cooperative’s strengths, weaknesses,opportunities and threats• Recognizing the board’s oversight responsibility• Using the strategic plan in the annual evaluation of thecooperative’s accomplishment and as the foundation ofthe CEO’s performance appraisal.
2640.1 - Financial Decision MakingThis course is designed to help directors assess their cooperative’sfinancial position via financial statements used infinancial reporting and planning, as well as key ratios developedfrom these financial statements. Participants will also recognizehow board decisions impact their co-op’s financial position.KEY TOPICS• Identifying the key financial decisions boards make• Recognizing the uniqueness of the cooperative businessmodel and a typical cooperative’s financial attributes• Recognizing three financial documents and related keyfinancial ratios• Explaining how board decisions impact the financialposition and financial statements• Understanding the difference between reporting acooperative’s financial results and understanding acooperative’s financial position• Describing the audit function
